The Transition from Job to Home11.30.09

People want to make a living from home.  There is no denying that.

Two things get in the way.

1. Replacing the income
2. Transforming the mindset

One might assume that the first one in that short list is the most important.  And, of course, you can’t quit your job unless you have other income coming in.  However, that income can be built up gradually while you are still working 9 to 5.

The second thing on that list is often the more difficult of the two.  Working for yourself at home can surprise you with unusual feelings.  Freedom is the first one.  It is good to feel free of the rat race, but too much freedom will lead to total collapse of your home business.

The most common problems when transitioning from job to home are:

1. Procrastination
2. People expecting you to have free time
3. Not organizing time well
4. Procrastination

5. Lack of balance between home and work

It takes a lot of self discipline to work from home.

The best part of owning your own business02.16.09

Owning my own business was the only possible option for me. As a divorced Mom, I wanted more than anything to be able to raise my children myself, without shipping them off to full-day child care. Now that I have been in business for myself for several years, my outlook has changed. The best part of owning your own business is the freedom it gives to take responsibility for your own life.
The freedom often envisioned by those not involved in owning your own business often includes hot sports cars and trips to the Caribbean taken whenever the mood strikes. After all, that is what they show in those home-business informercials, right?

Of course some people make enough money owning their own business to do things like that, but it is not the reality for most entrepreneurs. The freedom I’m talking about is the freedom to take responsibility for your own life.

Owning your own business provides opportunities for self-respect that working for a boss never could. It is harder to be able to rely on yourself when someone else tells you what to do, or you can lay off work on others. Owning your own business gives you the reins to control the devlopment, production, and marketing of your dream. Whether you reach your destination or plunge off the cliff into financial ruin is all on your shoulders.

By this point, you might think I’m crazy. Having that type of responsibility sounds stressful! And it can be! However, the sense of accomplishment when you find success is second to none. The freedom to take reponsibility for your own life is a powerful thing.

That freedom of owning your own business lets you wake up at any hour, as long as you schedule enough time to complete all required tasks. That freedom of owning your own business allows you to make as much profit as you want, as long as you work hard to get there. You can build and grow your business until you command many employees, or keep it simple on your kitchen table. You can tailor your life and finances to whatever you want, as long as you are confident and hard-working enough to make it happen.

The best part of owning your own business is the freedom to take responsibility for your own life. Trips to Tahiti and Corvettes are great, if you can get there financially, but the feeling of paying your mortgage, your grocery bill, or for your kid’s dance lessons with money you created yourself is better than anything.

Online Work Organizational Methods02.10.09

As the new year gets under way, I’ve been spending a lot of my time organizing my time and making plans and goals for 2009. I use various methods to organize my online work. Google Calendar I LOVE Google Calendar for tracking my time and maintaining a to-do list. I make a different color-coded calendar for each website I own as well as daily tasks and my freelance writing. Each thing I do gets a new listing on the calendar and I use the repeat function extensively. When I complete a task for the day, I simply delete it from that day’s calendar box. GoalEnforcer Goal Enforcer is a graphical goal-setting software program that I think is worth every penny. I create projects for both short term and long term goals, including financial goals. It not only keeps me on track, but allows some positive feedback in the form of percent complete reports. Written Date Planner I also use a daily planner for all the extra stuff I need to do. This helps me keep track of appointments, exercise goals, plan outings with my kids, and organize homeschooling lessons. I also mark down writing goals such as submission dates and deadlines for contests.

Taking Vacation When Self-Employed Online01.29.09

This is a subject talked about on a lot of WAHM (work at home Mom) forums. How do you take a vacation when you are self-employed online?
Of course, if your income is passive, meaning through affiliate links, contextual advertising, or the like, there is no trouble with take a week off. Granted, your advertising might take a downturn, but it will not affect your overall earnings.

What if you are self-employed online in a way that requires daily attention? E-commerce is one such business.

The easiest answer is to take a laptop computer with you on vacation. However, if you want any kind of life, you should try not to do this. Still, customer service should not suffer.

So, what do you do?

1) Post a notice on your website that you will be away for the week.

2) Set up an autoresponder on your email account stating when you will be back..

3) Suspend active advertising campaigns for the duration of your vacation.

These are just some of the things that can help you take a vacation with limited worry about your online business. Whether they offend your customers or not is the next question.
